Cathedral City Mayor recount begins Thursday
Challenger Chip Yarborough, who barely lost the race for Cathedral City’s Mayor, announced last week he was seeking a recount. The Riverside County Registrar announced late Monday that the recount will begin on Thursday.
Incumbent Mayor Kathy De Rosa won the Mayor’s seat by 13 votes after Riverside County Registrar releases final certified results last Monday.
De Rosa ended up with 5,729 votes and challenger Chip Yarborough, who lead the race up until last week, ended up with 5,716 votes a difference of 13 votes.
On average a recount costs about $1,500 dollars per day, which Yarborough will have to pay for. He says he’s budgeting anywhere from $3,000-$10,00 for the recount. The challenger believes he owes it to his supporters to try.
“The amount of support we got, nobody has come this close to beating Kathy DeRosa and I think it says a lot about our message and campaign,” said Yarborough.
DeRosa says her challenger’s decision isn’t surprising.
“It generally does not change the result of an election. So, I have every reason to remain confident,” she said.
Yarborough says whatever the outcome, he plans to help “restart Cathedral City.”
“I’m still going to be engaged. If I win, that’s great. If Kathy wins, I’m going to reach out to her. Our city is hurting and we need some help,” he said.
The Registrar’s news release did not state how many days they expect to be counting but say that the count will commence each day at 9:00 a.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m. The count will take place at the Registrar’s Office in Riverside.
