Palm Springs High School Band performs in inaugural parade
The Palm Springs High School marching band performed at the presidential inaugural parade in Washington, D.C., Monday following the swearing-in of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.
Palm Springs Unified School District spokeswoman Joan Boiko said applications were reviewed by the Presidential Inaugural committee, which includes military band members. The committee assesses presentation skill of marching bands, musical acts and drill teams.
More than 2,800 applications were submitted — more than double the more than 1,380 groups that applied to participate in Obama’s first inauguration, according to organizers.
“The talented groups chosen to participate in the inaugural parade reflect the spirit, values, and diversity of our great nation,” Obama said in a statement. “Vice President Biden and I are honored to have them join us in the parade.”
The Palm Springs High School band “Spirit of the Sands” has performed in many local parades on such occasions as Veterans Day, and has appeared at such events as “Salute to Heroes” at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden and Memorial Day ceremonies.
