4.8-magnitude quake shakes S. California coast

The magnitude of a Southern California coastal earthquake has been revised upward slightly to 4.8.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the 7:38 a.m. Wednesday temblor was centered 3 miles west of Isla Vista in Santa Barbara County, and shaking was felt as far away as Bakersfield and Los Angeles. It was earlier estimated at magnitude-4.6.

A Santa Barbara County sheriff’s dispatcher says there are no reports of damage or injuries.

The epicenter was in the Santa Barbara Channel region about 100 miles west of Los Angeles. California typically experiences about 15 quakes greater than magnitude-4.6 every year. The Santa Barbara region has been seismically quiet in recent years.

Last week, a magnitude-5.7 temblor hit a remote section of Northern California and caused some damage.
