Rancho Mirage woman dead after crash on Highway 111

One woman is dead and two others were hospitalized following a two-car crash in Rancho Mirage Tuesday afternoon, police say.

The Riverside County Coroner says a passenger, 81-year-old Rancho Mirage resident Barbara Schmitz, died at Eisenhower Medical Center two hours later.

Police say a BMW collided with a Ford Focus at Highway 111 and Dune Views around 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Both the driver of the BMW and the driver of the Ford Focus had to be pulled from their vehicles, and are still hospitalized.

The driver of the BMW is expected to survive, while the driver of the Ford Focus is being treated for life-threatening conditions.

The identity of each party involved in this collision is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Late Tuesday night, the eastbound lanes of Highway 111 remained closed for the investigation.
