Gay marriage ruling draws sober response in SF
The news that the U.S. Supreme Court has cleared the way for same-sex marriages in California is drawing a subdued reaction from a crowd gathered at San Francisco City Hall.
The high court let stand a trial court ruling that overturned the state’s voter-approved gay marriage ban. But lawyers for the ban’s sponsors plan to fight to limit it to only the two couples who challenged Proposition 8.
That means that more legal wrangling is likely to ensue before it is clear when marriage would be available to all.
Many activists had hoped the court would strike down bans on gay marriage across the nation as unconstitutional.
The battle over same-sex marriage in California started at City Hall in 2004, when then-mayor Gavin Newsom ordered city clerks to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.
