Family of 6 displaced after DHS apartment fire

Firefighters have contained a structure fire in Desert Hot Springs. The two-story blaze was reported around 10 a.m. Thursday.

According to Cal Fire, it started on the patio of an apartment on the second floor of the complex, located at 66550 Ironwood Drive, and quickly spread to the attic.

Fire officials said four kids under the age of five and their parents were home at the time of the fire. The father was in the shower and the mom was washing dishes.

Sprinklers at the apartment triggered quickly as the children’s mother rounded up the kids to get them to safety. The father had to flee the apartment wearing only a towel.

The family was obviously shaken up but nobody was hurt.

17 firefighters responded to the blaze and had the flames extinguished by 10:25 a.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The family of six has been displaced, the American Red Cross has been called to assist them, according to the Incident Commander.
