Coachella Fest scalpers out to cash in

Coachella Fest weekend one is officially in motion and it’s obvious as music lovers take over desert streets and local grocery stores. Some stock up for the three day music marathon and others look to score tickets.

“I’m trying to get a ticket,” said Alexandra Zellner, of Chicago. “Word on the street, people would be selling at Ralphs. So far I’ve just seen people looking for tickets.”

While some people like Zellner actually need tickets, scalpers with “I need tickets” signs are out to cash in on the dimes of festival hopefuls. On Jefferson Street in Indio you’ll spot them at almost every major intersection. And Indio Police know they’re there.

“People want that opportunity. There’s always going to be that person who wants to make that quick dollar,” said Indio Police spokesman Ben Guitron.

Guitron said be aware of who you buy from and where.

“Obviously they’re doing it at visible locations not on back street corner, that would be another clue. Make sure it’s legitimate,” he said.

One scalper said festival wristbands are going for as much as $1,000 a piece.

“It’s big bucks. You don’t want to get scammed,” said Louis Poire, of Mexico City.

“All we’re saying is be careful. Don’t let your greed override your common sense,” said Guitron.
