More details released after woman dies in Palm Desert DUI crash

A Los Angeles area woman is dead and two others are recovering from minor injuries after a head-on crash in Palm Desert Friday night, authorities believe involved either drugs or alcohol.

The Riverside County Coroner’s Office identified the woman as Crystal Corbin, 27, of Tustin.

The crash happened at about 9:40 p.m. Friday night at Country Club Drive, just west of Adams Street, near the Bermuda Dunes airport. Corbin suffered major injuries and was trapped in the wreckage of her Hyundai sedan.

According to the California Highway Patrol, 19-year-old Jonathan Chavez-Ortega of Indio was driving a Ford Ranger westbound on Country Club Drive, approaching Corbin’s Hyundai.

Officers said Corbin’s car traveled to the left, crossing the double yellow lines and striking Chavez-Ortega’s truck head-on.

Officers said Corbin was believed to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the crash.

Corbin died at the scene. An 8-year-old boy in the backseat of her car complained of pain and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, according to the CHP release. Corbin’s relationship to the boy is unknown at this time.

Chavez-Ortega suffered minor injuries in the crash and was also taken to the hospital. Officers said an 18-year-old female passenger in his truck was uninjured in the collision. Everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seat belt.

Country Club Drive was closed between Washington Street and Jefferson Street while authorities investigated.
