February 26 Report:
We’re hearing new details about the victim who died early Friday morning after a collision in Cabazon. The sheriff’s department identified him as 30-year-old Rory Nason of Cabazon.
Riverside County and Morongo firefighters were called to the crash at the intersection of Magnolia Street and Bonita Avenue at 12:43 a.m.
More than 100 Southern California Edison customers experienced an outage due to downed power lines from the crash.
The victim’s family and friends said that two cars were not involved in the crash, but rather, Nason came upon an accident and tried to rescue anyone who may have still been in the car.
The victim’s family said it turned out that nobody was in the crashed vehicle.
His family tells us he was electrocuted and died in the process after grabbing the vehicle’s door. His fiancee, Ashley Pingree, burned her arms and face pulling Nason away from the car.
“They are just really giving people and when he saw the car he would automatically pull over, it was automatic, it wasn’t something he decided to do that was just his character that’s who he was,” said Carol Zimmer, a life time family friend who knew Nason his whole life.
Deputies with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department responded and began life-saving measures until Riverside County Fire personnel arrived. A short time later, Nason succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene.
The family is making funeral arraignments and has set up a fund for donations.
The driver of the car apparently abandoned it after the crash and there was no one inside the car when Nason arrived.
The Cabazon Sheriff’s Station is investigating this crash and is asking anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the station at (951) 922-7100.
