Students march for Cesar Chavez Day in Coachella
Cesar Chavez Elementary School in the Coachella Valley Unified School District held its 25th Annual Cesar E. Chavez Day March Thursday morning. The march began at 8:30 a.m.
CVUSD officials said Cesar Chavez Elementary School in Coachella is the first and only school Cesar Chavez dedicated during his lifetime.
The elementary school is located at 49601 Avenida de Oro.
Every year since the school opened its doors in 1991, students and staff have marched to De Oro Park wearing red shirts and waving United Farm Workers flags and banners chanting “Si Se Puede! (Yes We Can)”. Organizers said the march reflects on the historical struggles of the farmworkers of the Coachella and San Joaquin valleys, while keeping Cesar Chavez’s vision of equality for all alive, according to CVUSD’s release.
Students learn about Chavez’s historical movement but also get inspired to continue to fulfill his legacy in their community, organizers said.
Superintendent Adams said, “Heroes like Cesar Chavez are pillars and role models for our students and communities everywhere. It is in this light that we honor his service and commitment to fairness and equality.
A continental breakfast was served from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. leading up to the Cesar Chavez March to De Oro Park, which went from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m.
