Local Clinton supporters celebrate victory

Hillary Clinton supporters in the desert are not only celebrating their candidate becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee, but also a major moment in American history.

Some local Clinton supporters at the Democratic Headquarters of the Desert have been working for months to get their candidate the nomination and even though they are celebrating with the big wins on Tuesday night, they know the race for the White House is far from over.

Voters in the New Jersey were the lynchpin for Clinton to become the first woman to win a major party nomination for president of the United States.

“It feels pretty good it doesn’t mean we don’t have work to do but it feels really good,” said Randy Scott, a longtime Clinton supporter.

“She understands women’s issues on a very personal level. She certainly made this exciting and I think she is brilliant,” said M. Joan Martin who has been working phone banks making calls on behalf of the Clinton campaign.

Local Bernie Sanders supporters were glued to the television as well, but came away disappointed in the way things turned out especially with superdelegates.

“I think it should be our choice, our vote. We are registered Democrats, we vote and it should be a majority of those delegates. It should be the ones that we come up with not the superdelegates,” said Reverend Dr. Edward Moch, a Sanders supporter in Palm Springs.

And even with Donald Trump becoming the Republican party presumptive nominee weeks ago, local Republicans were still pushing very hard to get people to the polls to vote for Trump and other local candidates.

At GOP headquarters in La Quinta volunteers got a visit from Republican state Sen. Jeff Stone, who is running for Congress.

“It’s a time when we all come together and celebrate our accomplishments with this election, and I think we have a lot to be proud of,” said Stone.

Now the trick for the Democratic Party will be to get the millions of Sanders supporters to support Clinton.
