Local center helping Coachella Valley grieve nightclub massacre

Dr. Jill Gover, director of mental health services at the LGBT Community Center of the Desert, said the terror attack in Orlando affected many people on many levels.

“I think all of us are just so stunned and shocked and heartbroken,” she said. “We experienced it in Paris and now the United States. It’s a very dangerous and terrifying experience and we can’t minimize that,” she said.

She encourages people in the desert to take care of their mental wellness. Therapists at the mental health clinic at The Center in Palm Springs can help people deal with their grief.

Gover attended the vigil in Palm Springs that paid tribute to the victims in Orlando Sunday. She watched people in the Coachella Valley stand in solidarity, but said the unseen trauma can be profound.

“People may not realize it, but they may start isolating. They may experience depression,” Gover said. “We offer a free bereavement group and anyone is welcome to participate. We have individual, family and couples counseling.”

Dr. Gover said focus on the joy in your life and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

The Center is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 707-416-7899 or visit www.thecenterps.org
