Children’s defense classes hot this summer

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children says 11,000 attempted abductions of children have been reported in the past decade, and girls are targeted more often than boys.

“What’s really important is for kids to learn how to communicate effectively, how to set effective boundaries, how to stand up for themselves,” explains self-defense expert Jarrett Arthur.

Experts say cell phone and the internet are making it easier for online predators to reach children.

They urge parents to encourage their children to speak up when they feel uncomfortable with strangers or even people they know.

La Quinta based Christopher’s Clubhouse is offering self-defense classes this summer for children between the ages of 6-12 and their parents.

“Our programs are like insurance,” says Mika Moulton, founder of Christopher’s Clubhouse. “You hope you never need it but if you do – it is a godsend.”

The next Family Safety Camp is being held Saturday, August 6, from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Portola Community Center (45480 Portola Ave.) in Palm Desert.

For information, call toll free: (866) 546-7464 or (760) 989-2182

The Family Safety Camp is described as a “fun and interactive program for children ages 6-12 and their parents. This course provides practical and realistic life skills.”

Christopher’s Clubhouse also provides classes for private groups such as scout troops, youth groups, homeschoolers, and neighborhoods.
