Desert dwellers brace for very hot weekend
With possibly record-breaking temperatures on their way some Coachella Valley residents are making plans to beat the heat.
The Palm Desert Aquatic Center is preparing for huge crowds over the weekend, with families looking for a inexpensive way to keep everyone cool.
“I like going in the pool to do cool tricks and flips. I can swim and I can throw the raft and I can catch it,” said 7-year-old Roxanna Garcia who was swimming with her family.
“The only way to stay cool is in the pool and in the mall. From here we are heading to the mall to stay inside,” said Eligio Garcia of La Quinta.

The water can be fun and inviting but it’s still safety first. If you are heading to the pool bring plenty of sunscreen, spend some time in the shade, wear sandals, and stay hydrated.
“The main thing I spend my day doing is telling people not to run, because they are burning their feet and they don’t wait, but I don’t want them to slip and fall,” said Matthew Corrigan a lifeguard at the Aquatic Center.
From the liquid water to the frozen ice. Desert Ice Castle in Cathedral City is expecting plenty of people over the weekend. We caught up with a group of teens and for some this was their first time lacing up some skates. They were looking for a way to beat the heat.
Experienced skaters are very happy their sport of choice keeps them cool during incredibly hot days.
“I like skating because if you get really hot you can fall on the ice and just sit there,” said Cameron Keller who is training to be a figure skater with her twin sister.
Even with temperatures near 104 degrees we still found people hiking the Bump and Grind Hiking Trail in Palm Desert. With temperatures set to be 10 degrees hotter than that this weekend an afternoon hike is dangerous to say the least.
