Locals voice concern over UK’s vote to leave the European Union

Bo Frendsae is vacationing in the Coachella Valley from his home in Denmark. He was here when he learned the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.

“It’s going to create a lot of fuss of course over the next few years. It’s going to take two years for them to leave anyway,” says Frendsae, “It might create a situation where Denmark may want to leave too.”

He disagrees with this milestone referendum, “We’re the European Union. We’re supposed to stick together instead of what we’re doing now. It’s everybody for themselves rather than taking care of what really bothers us.”

Some locals enjoying their afternoon at Palm Springs’ Hair of the Dog English Pub says the UK is making the right move.

“It’s not about immigration. It’s about the overall regulations that the EU puts on everybody that’s in the European Union,” said one customer.

Some are concerned with the financial ramifications the vote has already had.

“I was disappointed that they voted to leave specifically because the stock market is down over 600 points today,” says Beverly Ventura, “It’s going to affect not only the UK but all of us here in the US.”

Presidential candidate Donald Trump shared his thoughts on the vote while in Scotland today.

“People that you don’t want or people that you think are going to be appropriate for your country or good for your country, you’re not going to have to take,” said Trump.

“Trump was saying how everyone was so excited that they voted to leave when in fact the majority of the people in Scotland voted to stay,” says local Beverly Ventura, unimpressed with the presumptive Republican nominee’s thoughts.

While UK tourists are the third most common international travelers to the United States, according to the US Department of Commerce, and frequent travelers to the Coachella Valley, locals seem to think the economy will be secure.
