Local DUI arrests increase from last year’s 4th of July enforcement

The California Highway Patrol Indio Area has released traffic statistics following the 4th of July weekend.

The Maximum Enforcement Period began Friday at 6:01 p.m. and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, July 4. Here are the results from the M.E.P:

Total collisions – 2016: 16; 2015: 10; 2014: 9
Fatal collisions – 2016: 1; 2015: 1; 2014: 0
Injury collisions – 2016: 4; 2015: 4; 2014: 4
DUI collisions – 2016/: 2; 2015: 1; 2014: 2
DUI arrests – 2016: 19; 2015: 10; 2014: 21

This year’s MEP was 24 hours longer than in 2015. DUI arrests were up from 2015 but slightly down from 2014’s statistics. CHP officers said driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs continues to be a problem and every one should designate a sober driver or take public transportation if they are impaired.
