SilverRock Resort’s accelerated construction pushed back to original date

SilverRock Resort in La Quinta will keep all 18 holes open for this summer, but construction of the new luxury hotel that was hoped to be ahead of schedule has been set back to its original start date in the summer of 2017.

While the golf course realignment has been completely designed, Robert Green, whose company is developing the property, says they didn’t want to rush the process and jeopardize the quality of the project.

Green says they weren’t able to plant the Bermuda grasses used on the course in time.

“If we started too late and didn’t get the sod planted in time, then we ran the risk of it not taking well, and really showing up as a poor quality job next summer,” says Green.

But the scheduling could mean golfers will be cut back in their tee time.

While we’re told the goal is to keep parts of the golf course open during construction at SilverRock Resort, the worst possible scenario did come up at the meeting today: to close the entire golf course for a period of time.

“It’s the first I’ve heard of it tonight that they might consider closing the entire golf course,” says Mark Johnson, who serves on the Community Services Commission for the city of La Quinta and golfs at the SilverRock Resort.

Johnson spoke at the city council meeting recommending alternate courses be found for golfers should the course be closed for construction.

“Our desire obviously is to keep the golf course running as much as possible, have interruptions be as short as possible,” says Green, “We’re certainly going to have to shut down the back nine next summer like we were going to have to this summer.”

Johnson is concerned his input and that of fellow golfers at SilverRock could be overlooked given the focus on construction.

“I think the long term benefit is what we’re all after, right?” says Green, “We want to develop multiple hotels. We want to develop a beautiful project, a new club house, and all of that is going to take some pain.”
