Coroner identifies woman killed in big rig crash on I-10

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of a big rig crash that occurred early Wednesday morning on I-10 near Palm Springs.

The deadly crash was reported at 5:40 a.m. in the westbound lanes just west of the State Highway 62 Interchange to Interstate 10. One westbound lane of the interstate was closed until about 12 p.m.

Officers said Shyan Barnes, 24, of Bandon, OR was a passenger in the big rig. She died at the scene, and the man who was driving was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with major injuries.

CHP said driver was also from Bandon, Oregon and is 42 years old. He was hauling PVC pipes on a flatbed trailer.

Officers said his Kenworth tractor traveled to the right, struck a street light and overturned on the shoulder of the road, spilling the load of PVC pipes.

Both the man and woman were trapped inside the semi-truck and had to be cut from the wreckage. Additional resources were requested to help with extrication including an engine and a truck from the Morongo Fire Department.

The semi-truck suffered major damage in the crash.

The wreckage forced police to close the freeway’s slow lane, but traffic was still moving freely. Motorists dealt with some delays throughout the morning.
