Suspected arsonist arrested after crime spree

Palm Springs police responded to several calls on Friday, July 8th about a male suspect who went on a crime spree throughout the night.

Around 9:15 p.m., officers first responded to a call that they had received from the suspect's roommate who said the man had intentionally set their kitchen on fire in a residence on South Camino Real.

The caller was able to extinguish the flames quickly and alerted authorities that the suspect had left the scene.

Several minutes later, police received a call about a car fire at the 76 gas station just off of South Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs.

While officers were en route to the location, dispatch received additional information that someone matching the description of the suspect had been seen purchasing gasoline and then covering his vehicle in it before setting it on fire.

The suspect fled the scene there and at 9:17 p.m., another call came in from a victim who said he had been carjacked near the intersection of South Palm Canyon Drive and East Sunny Dunes Road.

The victim said that the suspect fled the location in his white Kia Soul, and gave a description that again matched the suspect in the two other incidents.

Finally, around 10:00 p.m. police learned that the stolen vehicle had been involved in a collision in La Quinta.

The suspect was apprehended at the scene there and taken into custody.

He is currently being treated for injuries he sustained in the car wreck at the Inland Empire Burn Center, and is expected to be charged with multiple felony charges related to arson, carjacking and a DUI with bodily injury.
