Indio Community Center providing positive outlook for local kids this summer
A majority of us keep active during the summer by going to gym, maybe a 6 or 7 am early tee time. Anywhere we can get indoors. But what do you do if you are 5,6, 9 or 10 years old?
Well, those that live here in Indio come to the Indio Community Center. Where they play...BASKETBALL!
The courts are filled this summer in Indio. These young athletes love everything about basketball.
"We work as a team."
"I like dribbling it and bouncing it."
"I like dribbling and shooting it and passing it."
Others enjoy it because, well, outside right now is a little tough.
"Because it’s more cooler and fresh instead of outside," said Frankie Velasquez. "Outside there is wind, but the wind is blowing hot."
"I do not do well with the heat and we just moved down here from Seattle and it’s a big difference," said Miller Schuart.
The Indio Community Center has provided an outlook for Coachella valley kids for decades, but more recently for Eisenhower nurse Tiffany Frijas. A volunteer coach for her sons' team.
"A way to get my son active and not just be at home," said Frijas.
But what Tiffany didn’t know is how passionate she would be about this team. But Frankie says it’s nothing new. Just mom being mom.
"We always make a point she is always like this...yeah!!!," said Velasquez.
"Thank the Rec for giving my son the opportunity to be here in the summer," said Frijas.
Making buckets, having fun, lacing up the kicks, learning how to be apart of a team. This is a league driven by the community.
"I played on this league since I was seven years old and it’s one of those things where I played in it, I refereed in it, now I’m running it, I’ve coached in it," said Sports Specialist Manny Marrujo. "So, it’s a great opportunity."
