Visiting hiker rescued in Tahquitz Canyons
The Palm Springs Police Department and Agua Caliente Tribal Rangers rescued a hiker who became stranded in the Tahquitz Canyons on Sunday afternoon. Members of the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Unit began searching for the hiker just before 3 p.m.
Officials said Agua Caliente Tribal Rangers received information from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Air Operations Division at about 9:40 p.m. after the lost hiker was spotted. The hiker was found near the First Falls in Tahquitz Canyon, according to the authorities.
The hiker, whom was was visiting Palm Springs, was airlifted to safety and wasn’t injured.
Officials said the Indian Canyons is a 56-square mile area that includes more than 60 miles of trails. It’s a popular hiking destination and attracts thousands of visitors from around the world every year.
Law enforcement and Tribal Rangers who work in the canyons encourage visitors to wear appropriate clothing for the conditions, pack plenty of water, have a fully charged cell phone, stay on trails and allow enough time to return to trailheads well before closing time.
In addition hikers should tell a friend or family member details of the hike, including the name and location of the trail and estimated return time.
Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue consists of volunteers and is always looking for enthusiastic men and women willing to serve the community in a different and exciting way, officials said in the release.
