MILWAUKEE (WISN) — The family of a young man who died in the Milwaukee County Jail is protesting for more information about how he died.
Brieon Green was found dead from a suspected suicide in the booking area June 26. During a protest march through downtown Milwaukee Saturday evening, his family said the lack of transparency is leading them to wonder what truly happened.
“I want justice for my son. I want to know the truth, I want to know what really happened in those last hours of his life. We need transparency. They haven’t told me anything,” said Green’s mother, Laquita Dunlap.
Green’s mother says she was told only that he hung himself with a short metal pay phone cord in the booking area shortly after arriving at the jail.
According to the sheriff’s office, Green was arrested on June 26 at the lakefront by deputies for disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and carrying a concealed weapon.
His aunt, Monique Brewer, said during the protest march that the sheriff’s office, thus far, has refused to release any video from his arrest, transport or his time in the booking area before he died.
“If you didn’t do anything, just show us that,” Brewer said.
WISN 12 News filed an open records request five weeks ago for the video surrounding Green’s death. It still hasn’t been released.
“We’re just asking for transparency. If nothing happened, just show us the cameras. Show us that he walked in there. Show us anything saying that he arrived alive.” Brewer said.
Saturday marked the third time the family has held a demonstration over Green’s death. Several dozen people marched through downtown and back to the Milwaukee County Courthouse.
His grandmother, JoAnn Brewer-Burton, said they plan to continue to march until they get some answers.
“We just want justice. We want to know what happened. We want to know what happened. How can those people sleep at night? This family is hurting. Our heart is hurting,” she said.
The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into Green’s death.
