Man accused of DUI after crashing golf cart & ejecting passenger

The La Quinta Police Department arrested a 41-year-old man from San Clemente Sunday afternoon for suspicion of DUI following a golf cart crash that ejected his 59-year-old passenger.

Officers said the collision happened on Oak Tree and Pete Dye at about 2:38 p.m.

According to police, Stephen Southam was driving the golf cart southbound on Oak Tree when he made an unsafe turn, ejecting his passenger. The man riding with Southam was taken to JFK Memorial Hospital in Indio to be treated for non life-threatening injuries.

Southam was booked into the Riverside County Jail in Indio for driving under the influence.

The La Quinta Police Department urges all drivers to not operate a motorized vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. To report suspected impaired drivers, you should call 911.
