Banning brush fire contained to 23 acres

A brush fire charred 23 acres of vegetation today in Banning before firefighters were able to douse the flames in about two hours. The blaze broke out at 2 p.m. near the area of Highland Springs Avenue and Wilson Street, Tawny Cabral of the Riverside County Fire Department said.

Responding fire crews located a large spot of burning vegetation, with the flames fueled by windy conditions.

The fire grew to eight acres by 3 p.m., at which point the department reported its advance had been stopped, Cabral said. However, at 4:17 p.m., the department reported the fire was contained at a final acreage of 23 acres.

This fire follows multiple brush fires that sparked in the western Coachella Valley on Friday morning.
