Local family gives new meaning to home base for Power players

The Palm Springs Power rely heavily on local families to provide housing over the 2-month season. The Calhoun family is one of those generous households that gives the players a home away from home.

My brother”— “my older brother.” The Calhoun sons said.

Connor and Ethan Calhoun, 8 & 10-years-old, and for two months of the summer Palm Springs Power captain Cody Ductoe from New Orleans calls the Calhouns his second family.

“I treat the little boys as little brothers. They are kind of like a second family all the way out here when mine is 2,600 miles away.” Palm Springs Power Captain Cody Ducote said.

“Kind of like an older brother to them. They look up to him.” Cara Calhoun, the host mother said.

“They find a big brother in Cody and develop a relationship that will stay with them long past his Power days.” Owner of the Palm Springs Power Andrew Starke said.

From playing video games together.

“There is no mercy!” “Yes there is…” “No theres not”

To giving advice about the game of baseball.

“Swing the bug, when you swing you keep your foot planted and turn.” Connor Calhoun said.

It’s just another role model in the Calhoun house helping steer the future.

“They thoroughly enjoy watching baseball, playing it in the house, playing it in the back yard and I just tell them to have fun with it because having fun with it has gotten me to where I am.” Ducote said.

“How much joy he brings to the house and how cool it is to have him here.” Connor Calhoun added.

“His head is always up.” said Ethan Calhoun.

Not only do the Calhouns take care of the Ducote here in the desert, but mama Ducote back in the bayou.

“Cody’s mom even this year said last year I was worried about him traveling across country and he’d never been that far away from home, this year I didn’t worry about it at all cause I know he was coming to your house and it’d be safe and that felt real good.” Cara Calhoun added.

“We me some great people through this process and it’s a great experience to reach out and share your households and if anyone has any hesitations reach out and call us.” Michael Calhoun finished.
