Palm Springs City Council approves construction of Dream Hotel
The Palm Springs City Council approved the construction of a four-story hotel next to the convention center Wednesday evening.
The construction of the Dream Hotel has been planned for 10 years, going through multiple changes but it has finally been approved.
“It is not a big brand so it allows you to be more individual. Which I think is important in Palm Springs. I think Palm Springs thrives on individuality,” said Lauri Kibby , managing member of Selene Palm Springs, the developer of the project.
The four-story hotel will have 171 rooms, 34 condos, 3 pools and underground parking. Fresh fruits and vegetables will be grown throughout the project to supply two restaurants.
“We have lots of great hotels here in Palm Springs and in the Valley, but this is going to give direct access to conventioneers and the convention center with a luxury hotel,” said Debra Hovel of Palm Springs.
David Powell, head of the HOA for Center Court which is the neighboring condo community to the project, said the developer has worked well to ease most of their concerns but residents sill worry about noise.
“What happens when the construction is complete and this doesn’t end all of the mitigated efforts are sufficient? Do we have recourse as homeowners and residents? What if the sound levels are large? We want to make sure that we are protected,” Powell said.
Selene Palm Springs agreed to replace windows on units facing the construction.
With other hotel currently being built in the city some might worry the growth might be to much to fast.
“Contrary to what a lot of people say, the more hotels you have and the more choice , and certainly a new choice, brings more people. It brings a broader demographic when you have different types of hotels,” Kibby said.
The developer is scheduled to break ground for construction in September. The Dream Hotel should be open by December of 2018.
