Ballew told KESQ News Channel 3/ CBS Local 2 that he’s been in touch with people at Camp Oakes and has been told that there is no indication that the camp is in harm’s way or will need to be evacuated.
The Executive Director of Camp Oakes put out a message on the camp’s Facebook reassuring that the kids are safe and away from harm.
“Everyone is safe and having a great day at YMCA Camp Oakes. We are tracking the fire on the mountain with local authorities and camp is currently in no danger. We will be notified immediately should that change and we will alert all of our guest families if there is any reason for concern. Have a wonderful evening!”
“I know she’s in good hands and well taken care of through YMCA. They’re great about keeping the kids safe and us parents updated,” said Nikkola Eto, parent of one of the campers.
Camp Oakes was evacuated just 2 years ago because of a nearby brush fire.
The kids and staff have been at Camp Oakes since last Saturday and will return this Saturday.
