Local charity honored as non-profit of the year

California Association of Non-Profits honored a local charity as the 42nd Assembly District’s non-profit of the year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters got the prestigious honor Wednesday at the second annual California Nonprofits Day at the State Capitol after being selected by Assemblyman Chad Mayes.

The non-profit organization was recognized for their work to change the lives of the youth in the Coachella Valley. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert work has made a huge impact on kids ages six through 18 and in the last three years, the program has grown by 153 percent since it was founded in 1996.

“Big Brothers Big Sisters is a very distinct and essential part of our community,” said Mayes. “It is with great pleasure that I honor them as the Nonprofit of the Year for the 42nd Assembly District for their outstanding work with the youngest and brightest members of our community.”

The president of big brothers big sisters, David Greenberg, was present in Sacramento to receive the letter of recognition.
