FIND Food Bank fights childhood hunger with summer program

School may be out for summer, but that can create stress for students and parents alike who rely on free and reduced price lunches. That’s where the FIND Food Bank steps in with the Kid’s Summer Club.

“During the summer months when most of us think about, ‘Yay! I’m off for a vacation,’ the actuality is for many of these kids..it’s also a time where they’re not quite sure where they’re going to get every meal of the day from,” said Lisa Houston, CEO and president of the FIND Food Bank.

According to the California Department of Education, 83 percent of local students rely on free and reduced price lunches, which means during the summer, meals aren’t always a guarantee.

FIND Food Bank brings Farmers Markets to local schools

The FIND Food Bank has partnered with many local agencies for food collection, including Tenet California hospitals like JFK Memorial Hospital, Desert Regional Medical Center, and Hi-Desert Medical Center. Local Tenet California hospitals compete in an annual cereal drive to support the Kid’s Summer Club.

“Many of these kids are at homes by themselves taking care of their siblings, so the beauty about cereal is maybe spilt milk and that’s it,” said Houston.
