GONZALES, California (KSBW) — The Gonzales Police Department arrested a suspect in the killing of several lambs at Gonzales High School.

Gonzales police responded to reports of dead and injured animals at the Gonzales High School 4-H grounds on Saturday. Upon arrival, authorities said they discovered two dead lambs and a third severely injured one.

On Thursday, the police department uncovered surveillance footage that led to the identification of the suspect as Jose Jesse Marquez, 31, of Gonzales.

Police contacted Marquez near 600 Rincon Road in Gonzales. Authorities say he was wanted for an outstanding warrant on an unrelated charge. After a brief struggle, Marquez was taken into custody, police noted.

The Gonzales Police Department says Marquez confessed to entering school grounds with the intention of stealing an unknown tool. Marquez told investigators he felt angry while on campus and bludgeoned the three animals before leaving the campus.

Marquez was transported to the Monterey County Jail and housed on several charges.
