Two Men Suspected In Attempted Palm Springs Murder

Two men remained jailed Wednesday in connection with a shooting at a Palm Springs apartment complex, police said.

Officers responded to Chateau Apartments, 2900 E. Ramon Road, at 2:06 a.m. Monday on a report of gunshots being fired, Palm Springs police Sgt. Mitch Spike said.

A transient, John Apolito, 33, displayed a handgun during an argument with a resident, witnesses told police, Spike said.

The resident, Jose Aragon, 24, locked himself in his apartment, but Apolito reportedly kicked open the door and fired at Aragon. Aragon, who was armed with a shotgun, fired back, striking Apolito in the shoulder, police said.

Officers detained both men and recovered the weapons, Spike said.

Apolito was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and burglary and is being held at the Riverside County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail, Spike said.

Aragon was arrested on suspicion of possessing a sawed-off shotgun and is being held at the Palm Springs Jail in lieu of $5,000 bail, Spike said.

Police are continuing an investigation, Spike said.
