A Small Glimpse Of A Homeless Life
PALM DESERT – Students at College of the Desert are sleeping in boxes Friday night. It’s all part of the Phi Theta Kappa’s ” Homeless Camp.”
Students want toraise awareness about the plight of homelessness here in the valley. Over the past couple years many shelters and food banks have seen a huge increase in demand for services.
“We have seen a 37 percent jump in demand,” says Kathleen Killian of theCoachella Valley Rescue Mission.
As home foreclosures and unemployment rise, more people are left with nothing. Homelessness is far reaching, touching people of all ages, races and classes.
“The faces of homelessness are changing,” says Killian.
C.O.D students who are camping out, took pledges from friends and family members. The funds will go to local charity organizations serving the homeless.
The “Homeless Camp” is only open to C.O.D students; however the college invites the public to attend a variety of workshops focusing on homelessness. Those workshops are Saturday at 8 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. At the East Annex facility on the C.O.D campus.
