Fire Destroys Home Near Desert Hot Springs
NEAR DESERT HOT SPRINGS – A house is now destroyed after a fire Sunday morning. It started just after 11 at a home near Power Line Road, north of Dillon and west of Indian.
Firefighters tell News Channel 3 a man living in a trailer next to the home was smoking a cigarette outside.. then tossed it. The winds apparently carried the cigarette as it caught some nearby trash on fire. Then, flames quickly spread to the home.
Nobody was inside at the time. But, neighbors feared those winds would carry the flames toward their homes.
When asked how nervous the fire made him feel, neighbor Gabriel Maldonado says, “Oh, feel bad. Very bad. That’s why I came, fly over here. I got my horses out and everything. Now that everything’s nice, I put my horses back.”
Cal-Fire needed help from Palm Springs firefighters because of a lack of water in that isolated neighborhood near the windmills.
