Heart4Soles Helps Provide Gifts And Shoes To Students

INDIO – Hundreds of children in the desert are walking with confidence and comfort, after unwrapping new shoes Friday morning. Christmas came early for underprivileged students at Van Buren Elementary School in Indio thanks to a group of valley moms.

Before the students get to class, secret santas place gifts at every child’S desk. Inside is something most of the students have never unwrapped, never owned.

” They have shoes and clothes, but they are not in the best condition. They may be too small or too large,” says Melinda Wallace, Principal at Van Buren Elementary School.

However five local mother’s changed that through “Hearts 4 Soles”. In just 3 weeks, they collected enough shoes and presents to surprise every kindergartener at Van Buren Elementary.

” The idea became contagious and infectious,” says Kimmberleigh Kelsey, “Hearts 4 Soles” creator. ” It spread like wildfire.”

The original plan was to outfit just one class, but as donations rolled in the plan snowballed.

” The community came together providing lightly used uniforms, new uniforms and coats, everything,” says Kelsey.

Thanks to some big donors, the gifts and surprises won’t stop here. Nike is also on board, making a huge donation. They are giving every student a new pair of shoes, socks and a backpack.

” It’s awesome to get new shoes,” says one student.

Ninety eight percent of the students at Van Buren live in poverty. Their parents can’t afford new clothes, shoes or toys.

” For these kids, getting something new is overwhelming,” says Kelsey.

The kids can’t wait to try out their new shoes; a gift that not only boosts confidence, but touches souls.

” It makes me feel good,” says kindergartner Erik.

“Hearts 4 soles” is an ongoing project, the goal is to reach other valley schools and give all needy students shoes, clothes and supplies.
