Damage From Weekend Quake Hits $22 Million

EUREKA -Officials in the Northern California city of Eureka say damage from this weekend’s earthquake has climbed to nearly $22 million.

Gary Bird, a spokesman for the city, said Tuesday the latest figure from the magnitude-6.5 temblor reflects damage to 240 buildings. It is up from $14.3 million for 175 buildings on Monday.

Eureka is the largest city affected by Saturday’s quake centered in the Pacific Ocean about 22 miles west of Ferndale.

Bird says officials are continuing to assess buildings, and he expects the damage estimate to climb even higher.

Damage estimates for Humboldt County were expected to take several days. County officials did not immediately return calls Tuesday morning.

Saturday’s quake sent about 30 people to emergency rooms, but only one was seriously injured.
