Riverside County Fair & Nat’l Date Festival Opens This Weekend
INDIO – The alternative rock band Switchfoot will headline a concert tonight at the Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival.
The concert is set for 8 p.m. at the Fantasy Springs Concert Pavillion at the fairgrounds.
The festival, which opens at 10 a.m., features more than 200 exhibitors, plus traditional fair events, such as carnival rides and a camel and ostrich race, said festival spokeswoman Veronica Helgeland.
The classic rock band Kansas was initially scheduled for the concert, but the performance was canceled because the lead singer fell ill, Helgeland.
During the entire festival, different types of dates — stuffed with chocolate, coconut or nuts — will be on sale throughout the fairgrounds, Helgeland said.
The festival will close with a demolition derby at Grandstand Arena.
Admission to the festival, which is sponsored by the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, begins daily at 10 a.m., with gates closing at 10 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends. General admission is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $6 for group bus tours, $6 for youth and no cost for children under 5 years of age. For more information call (800) 811-3247.
