Obama’s New Health Care Plan Could Be Unveiled Monday

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is set to release a new version of a health care overhaul bill as soon as Monday.

The White House is expected to post the proposed bill on its Web site, ahead of President Barack Obama’s televised health care summit later this week.

The plan will likely require most Americans to carry health insurance coverage, and also offer federal subsidies to help many people afford the premiums. It’s also expected to bar insurance companies from denying coverage to people with medical problems or charging them more.

The expected price tag is around $1 trillion over 10 years. The plan would be paid for with a mix of Medicare cuts and tax increases.

Thursday’s Blair House meeting takes place nearly a year after Obama launched his drive to remake health care. The summit at the White House guest residence is to be televised live on C-SPAN and perhaps on cable news networks. It represents a risky and unusual step by the administration that Obama can save his embattled overhaul through persuasion.
