California Insurance Department Finds Blue Cross Violations
SACRAMENTO -California’s insurance regulator says his office has found more than 700 violations by Anthem Blue Cross, the state’s largest for-profit health provider.
Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner says the violations include late payment of claims, giving misleading information to consumers and failing to cooperate with regulators.
The Thousand Oaks-based company faces a maximum $10,000 penalty for each violation, Poizner said in a statement released Monday.
His office said the violations occurred between 2006 and 2009.
The insurer did not immediately respond to telephone and email inquiries seeking a response.
Anthem has been criticized recently for proposing rate hikes as high as 39 percent.
