Interstate 5 Back Open After Explosive Device Found
SAN CLEMENTE – Authorities have reopened Interstate 5 in San Clemente after using a robot to remove a grenade from the freeway.
California Highway Patrol Officer Eric Barnard says a bomb squad robot safely moved the grenade to the shoulder on Friday afternoon and placed a protective covering over it. The device will be detonated to determine whether it was live or inert.
The freeway was closed around 11:40 a.m. after motorists notified the CHP that an explosive device was sitting on the freeway.
The shutdown caused a traffic backup of about six miles.
The grenade is under investigation by the U.S. Marine Corps and Homeland Security.
