Non-Profit ‘Scars to Freedom’ Gets Worldwide Exposure

It is one of the hardest memory for a soldier to overcome. A battle wound from war. One local Coachella Valley non-profit is helping soldiers put the past behind and get rid of their scars. Scars to Freedom is only two years old and right now is helping soldiers returning from war. With the help of doctors volunteering their time, the group can provide thousands of dollars in servcies for free.

The group is even getting worldwide exposure. Sgt. Ashleigh Torres from the U.S. Army’s teleivison station spent a couple days in the Valley reporting on the non-profit. Torres says, “This story will be in every post, on local public access channels, it will be seen by millions of people around the world.”

The founder of Scars to Freedom Dr. Guadalupe Ponte says, “I’ll feel honored to be able to do this, they fought for our freedom it is the least we can do.” On Wednesday Sgt. Ryan Federick came into her office for an appointment. He has scars on his arm and face from fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is now a recruiter and says, “It really helps my self-esteem, it does help me forget the memories when I wake up in the morning, when I look into the mirror it is not recognizable.

The Scars to Freedom needs more help in order to help more soldiers. If you’d like to donate or know a soldier who could use its help log onto www.scarstofreedom.com.
