Two east valley residents are accused of stealing copper wire from an abandoned schoolhouse.

Thursday afternoon, Riverside County Sheriff’s deputies were called about a pair of suspicious people lurking around the former Oasis School building on Avenue 76.

Someone nearby saw them taking copper wiring out of the portable classrooms.

The investigation took deputies to a home, where they found cutting tools and 60 pounds of copper wire.

Forty-one year-old Mary Tamayo and 43-year-old Jesus Chaidez were arrested for grand theft and possession of stolen property.
