Indio Celebrates 80th Anniversary Today

Indio will mark its 80th anniversary with a celebration at City Hall today.

At 9 a.m., Mayor Gene Gilbert will speak and unseal a time capsule.

Among the tell-tale items in the capsule is the book “Indio: Reflections and Visions,” city spokesman Jim Curtis said.

Copies of newspapers in English and spanish will be placed into the capsule, along with a photo of the current City Council, he said.

Indio began as a halfway point on the Southern Pacific Railroad line between Yuma and Los Angeles in the 1800s and was incorporated in 1930.
