Firefighters Battle Vegetation Fire In Thermal

A vegetation fire broke out in Thermal today, injuring a firefighter and prompting a road closure.

The blaze was reported at 2:10 p.m. near Pierce Street at Avenue 70, said Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department.

More than 50 firefighters battled the flames, which had spread to about five acres by 4 p.m., Hagemann said.

A firefighter was evaluated by paramedics for heat-related injuries, she said. The afternoon temperature near Mecca was around 110 degrees.

Pierce Street was shut down between Avenue 69 and 70, according to Hagemann.
