Thermal Crash Brings Down Power Lines, Ignites Fire

One person was injured in a crash that brought down power lines and sparked a grass fire near Thermal, a fire official said today.

The crash and fire occurred around 10:15 p.m. Thursday at Tyler Street and Avenue 60, said Capt. Jim Brown of the Riverside County Fire Department.

Access to the flames was difficult because of the live wires, but firefighters were able to get the upper hand once the power company turned off the electricity, Brown said.

Nearly 40 firefighters contained the 1-acre brush fire by midnight, according to Brown.

One motorist was taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, he said.
