Murder Victim Was Due In Court For Drug Charges

A 28-year-old Indio man found dead in his driveway had been due in court today on felony drug charges, court records show.

Matthew Lamar Roberts was found shortly before 4 a.m. Tuesday in the 43400 block of Burr Street, north of Fred Waring Drive. He had been shot at least once, said Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron.

Detectives are tracking the victim’s last day because no witnesses of the shooting have come forward, Guitron said.

“He didn’t say anything to anyone. Our detectives have to trace back what he was doing, where he was going, who he last talked to,” he said.

Detectives have not determined whether Roberts’ criminal history played a part in his slaying, Guitron said.

Roberts was arrested in July on drug charges and posted $25,000 bail. He was due in court today for arraignment on charges of possession of cocaine for sale, possession of a controlled substance for sale, possession of a controlled substance while armed and being a felon with a firearm.

Roberts pleaded guilty in 2002 to charges of evading and resisting arrest and was sentenced to three years probation.
