Free Flu Shots This Weekend

Free flu shots will be given to the first 100 people, ages 18 or older, who ask for them at the 6th Annual Women’s Health Fair, sponsored by the Desert AIDS Project.

The cost of the flu shots have been underwritten by 100 WOMEN, a donor group dedicated to the concerns of women and children whose lives are affected by HIV or AIDS.

The health fair will be held on Saturday, September 18, from 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. at the D.A.P. headquarters located at 1695 N. Sunrise Way in Palm Springs.

Every Friday from September 24 to November 19, D.A.P. will offer flu shots, as well as vaccines against Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis) and a three-round vaccine against hepatitus A and B. Each vaccine will cost $25. All vaccines will be available from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. at D.A.P. headquarters. Appointments are strongly encouraged by calling (760) 323-2118 ext. 223.

Health officials say this year’s influenza vaccine, Trivalent, will protect against the H1N1 virus and two other strains of the virus. As a result, Californians will need only one shot this season. Last year the H1N1 virus, also known as the “swine flu,” caused the first influenza pandemic outbreak in more than 40 years.

The Centers for Disease control says the flu season peaks usually in January or February, but people should get the flu shot as soon as possible.

Individuals in the following groups are at the highest risk for serious flu-related illnesses:

Adults 65 years of age and olderChildren 6-59 months of ageChildren and adults with a chronic medical condition, such as asthma, diabetes, heart or lung diseasePregnant womenHousehold contacts of infants younger than 6 months, including brothers and sistersOut-of-home care givers of infants younger than 6 months

The Riverside County Family Care Centers in Palm Springs and Indio also will offer walk-in flu vaccinations. In Indio, walk-ins will be accepted Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. In Palm Springs, walk-ins will be accepted Tuesday – Thursday from 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. and from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. For more information about the walk-in schedule, please call the centralized scheduling department at (800) 720-9553.
