Cathedral City Police Release 911 Calls From Deadly Police Shooting

A man allegedly barged into a Cathedral City home with a handgun and was shot dead on its front lawn by officers today. The Riverside County Coroner says the victim is 21 year-old Jesus Juan Hernandez-Cazares of Cathedral City.

At 3:06 a.m., officers got a call saying the suspect let himself into a home on the 31800 block of Sky Blue Water Trail in Cathedral City and was armed with a handgun. Several people were in the house at the time, said police Lt. Charles Robinson.

Officers pulled up and found the suspect on the front lawn and got in a confrontation with him immediately. An officer shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the lieutenant said. After a brief chase officers say he was confronted and that’s when the officer fired two shots at Hernandez-Cazares.

Investigators are trying to put together a timeline of events. At one point they believe he was in the home, then left. It’s still unclear whether the suspect ever pointed his weapon at the officer.

Family members says Hernandez-Cazares’ girlfriend lived next-door to the home where he was shot and killed early Sunday morning.

Hernandez-Cazares’ good friend Freddy Hernandez says somethings fishy, he said, “Witnesses said the cops patted him down, had him handcuffed. They unhandcuffed him and when the witnesses woke up in the morning they learned he was dead.”

The Cathedral City Police officer involved in the shooting has been put on paid administrative leave, a common practice after an officer involved shooting. He has been on the force for 5 years.

The incident is under investigation. Detectives asked anybody with information to call the Cathedral City Police Department at (760) 770-0300.
