Indio Family Without Home After Fire

A firefighter and a resident were injured during a blaze that damaged a single-wide mobile home Sunday morning.

The fire was reported at 4:52 a.m. at the Pueblo Del Sol mobile home park on the 81300 block of Avenue 46 in Indio.

Isa Marmeza and her family were asleep inside, when they woke up to flames.

“My mom was just screaming and we got outside and we didn’t have any time to get over it. Like get stuff out of it,” said Marmeza.

According to the Red Cross, the fire started in a shed behind the mobile home and quickly spread.

The first firefighters arriving at the single-wide home reported flames visible and the residents were evacuating. Five engines, one truck and 25 firefighters put out the blaze by 5:25 a.m., according to Jody Hagemann of the fire department.

One firefighter was rushed to the hospital with a knee injury, and a Marmeza’s father was hospitalized for mild to moderate burns, said Hagemann.

Crews are investigating what caused the fire.

“Yeah I don’t know what happened at all. We just got out, and there was a lot of fire, and we didn’t know what to do,” said Marmeza.

The fire caused park management to turn off the main gas line. According to notice issued to residents, the gas company is scheduled to return service by Monday and offer help relighting pilot lights.

The home is a total loss.

Neighbors are helping the family of five where they can by bringing them food while the family gets ready to move to a local hotel the Red Cross is providing for a few days.

“We are also helping put them back on their feet by giving them contributions of money for clothing and food and again it’s through the generous donations of our community,” said Jeff Daucher, disaster team captain with the Red Cross.

The family is asking for help to get back on their feet.

You can make donations at the Red Cross office in Palm Desert at 41951 Corporate Way, Suite B or 74140 El Paseo Drive. You can also donate through their website: http://www.riversidecounty.redcross.org/
