Man Armed With Fake Gun Shot By Officer In Cathedral City

Cathedral City police officers respond to a possible suicidal person Monday night who was reportedly armed with a gun.

They confronted the man, identified as 27-year-old Christopher Mendoza of Cathedral City, near a sidewalk just after 9 p.m. on the 67-700 block of Paletero Road.

Authorities say the person shot lived in a residence down the block.

He was reportedly making threats to family members that he was going to kill himself.

In a news release issued by the department, Lt. Glen Haas said one of the officers got into a confrontation with the man, which resulted in him shooting him with his service revolver.

He was rushed to Desert Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he is listed in critical condition.

Authorities do confirm however that a fake gun was found on the man after he was shot.
