Free Flu Shots For Some Seniors In East Valley
This year the Coachella Valley Volunteers In Medicine is partnering with the Riverside County Health Department in providing free influenza vaccines to the desert’s medically indigent elderly population living in the East Valley and Desert Hot Springs.
The goal is to help mitigate the severity and spread of disease throughout the Coachella Valley.
The medically indigent are at for severe illness because they lack resources and access to medical facilities. They oftentimes live in substandard environments that help spread the virus, according to Coachella Valley Volunteers In Medicine.
For healthy individuals with proper precautions and hygiene, flu symptoms are transient and not life threatening. However, for certain vulnerable populations, the flu can lead to catastrophic respiratory illness and death, as observed recently with the H1N1 virus. Vulnerable populations include the very young, the elderly, pregnant women and people with underlying chronic cardiopulmonary or immunologic illnesses.
